Jesus is much more than just the Savior and Master. This week's Bible study shows Jesus' role as our Bread. Let's begin by noting some characteristics of BREAD:
Mat 26:26 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and broke it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. John 6:31-46 John 6:31 Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread
from heaven to eat. |
Jesus is saying that He is the Bread of Life — He is Who has been formed by the Father to save and sustain the lives of sinful men, who have been converted from sin to function as servants to God. Bread must be eaten to maintain life. Most people eat bread everyday of their lives. Those who have no bread usually live in poverty and lack. And very often, they do not live as long as those who have a ready supply of bread. It is the same with Jesus. He must be 'eaten' everyday. In other words, by prayer, Bible study and self-sacrifice, we must worship Him, study Him and mimic Him daily. Like bread, to be properly sustained for our Spiritual lives, we must 'eat' Him everyday. Just like those who cannot eat bread everyday suffer hunger and have troubles that often have no relief. Those who ignore what they must do to live in Jesus will suffer Spiritual hunger: depression, paranoia, anxiety, etc. and will have little relief. Yet, those who actively live in Jesus have much less trouble, because He will provide help in time of trouble, and guidance that keeps one out of trouble. Though Jesus has been born of Mary in the flesh, in Spirit He is uncreated and has always existed, even before the creation of this world. In fact, Jesus (as God the Son) is Who actually did the work of creation. Colossians 1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: The same Spirit of Jesus that created the earth is the same Spirit that entered the unborn baby Jesus at the Miraculous Conception (she was impregnated by the Holy Spirit, not by a man). See Luke 1:26-35. Jesus is explaining that the Father God has "given" Him some men, women and children. Note that Jesus is implying this happened before He was conceived, while He was creating the world. He knows the Father's will, and then He is sent to the earth. Also, note that the men had no input into the decision. These men don't even know that they have been given to Jesus. Now think about that. Jesus said that He has not lost one that was given to Him. This means that these men are saved without any decision making on their part: He is going to raise them up on the last day. Instead of being happy that God was in their midst, the Jews are angry that Jesus has made such fantastic claims, though they all have heard the stories about the Messiah which is to come to them. They have known Him since He was a child, so they must have heard of His wisdom when speaking with the priests in the temple at 12 years old. They knew He worked as a carpenter, because they knew His earthly father and mother. But they did not know that He was really Fathered by God, and God did not reveal this to them. Because they did not believe, they were not yet given to Jesus. Since those given to Jesus were raised up at the last day (saved), God had to give it to them to believe in Jesus. The unbelieving Jews may have been given to Him later and saved. But Scripture does not say that at this point. Finally, Jesus makes it clear: God the Father does all the choosing of who will believe in, and come to Jesus. Men don't "choose" to be saved. God has all the prerogative. He chooses whom He will save, from the pool of damned humanity, before those people are even born. If the damned cannot save themselves from Hell, how can those who don't even know they are damned make a decision to submit to Christ to be saved? God is the one who changes hearts. |
