Wednesday Bible Study

Oct 1, 2008

Jesus is much more than just the Savior and Master.

This week's Bible study shows that Jesus is His earthly name. But He has other names, one of the most important being, the Word.

Below are Scriptures that show:
  • Jesus (known in heaven as the Word) existed before the formation of our world
  • He was active in the Old Testament as a Spirit, and as a flesh person before He was physically formed as Jesus
  • Different spirits will influence flesh to say different things.

One way to determine which Spirit/spirit may be influencing a man or woman are the words that proceed from their mouths. The Spirit of God will always influence the Truth of God. Other spirits will influence both Truth and untruth.

Job 15:13 That you turn your spirit against God, and let such words go out of your mouth?
Job 26:4 To whom have you uttered words? Whose spirit came forth from you?
The underlined Scripture shows that Jesus . . .
  1. was with God before coming to earth as a baby,
  2. has given life* to everything on the earth,
  3. refers to the Spirit that drives His Words as a type of food. Just as flesh eats flesh to fuel the life of flesh, spirit "eats" Spirit (God's Word) to fuel the life of man's Spirit/spirit,
  4. is the Word in heaven, and is God,
  5. is uncreated. He always was, and had no beginning, nor does He have an ending.

*life = the Spirit/spirit that enables man to not be dead. As a puppet must have a the strength of a man to give it voice and movement, flesh must have the strength of Spirit/spirit to give it voice and movement.

If a man removes his voice and strength from a puppet, the puppet will cease to have 'life'. If God removes Spirit/spirit from a man, he will also cease to have life.

Ecclesiastes 12:7 and the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.

John 6:33 For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.

John 6:38 For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.

John 3:13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.

John 3:31 He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all.

John 6:50 This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.

Ephesians 4:9 (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?

Micah 5:2 But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 8:58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

John 17:5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.

Hebrew 7:3 Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually.
Heb 7:4 Now consider how great this man was, unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils.

This man (Melchizedek) had no mother, father or descendants (nothing to indicate he was married), had no beginning of days, no end of life, made (changed, formed) like the Son of God, forever sanctified as a priest (whose priesthood was above the Levitical priesthood).

How else can a man exist without God changing him and forming him from another being, when Scripture states he has no parents, he has always existed, he will always exist, he was always a high priest, and he will always be a high priest.

Who else can this be but the Word, changed into Melchizedek, king of Salem (= king of Peace), later born as Jesus, to function as the Sacrifice (the Lamb) offered by the High Priest, Jesus (after He was resurrected)?
Hebrew 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.

In the Old Testament, the capitalized form of the Word refers to Jesus before He was born as a baby, to live in the form of flesh.

It may help you to think of the Word as person, who is not flesh, but has a different type of body.
John 6:63 It is the spirit who gives life. The flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and are life.

1 Corinthians 15:40 There are also celestial bodies, and terrestrial bodies; but the glory of the celestial differs from that of the terrestrial.
After His resurrection . . .
1) He appeared in another form. Mark 16:12
This shows that Jesus could be seen, but that He had a body that enabled Him to do things that a flesh body cannot.
2) He vanished. Luke 24:31
3) He appeared from nowhere. Luke 24:36-37
Here, it seems He used a non-flesh body to appear, but then immediately "switched" to a flesh body, explaining that spirits do not have flesh and bones - v. 39.
4) He was unrecognized by Mary Magdalene. John 20:14
5) He appeared through walls as a ghost. John 20:19

Remember, think of the Word as Jesus operating in a non-flesh body. Then you will be able to picture Jesus (operating as the unseen Word) whispering to the prophets of God, giving them the information they need to relay to God's people. God's Holy Spirit often, also, does the whispering to the prophets.

We often call those words and voices in our heads that goad us toward "doing the right thing" our conscience. But it is the Holy Spirit of God and/or the Word of God who are whispering to us to act in righteousness and obedience to God.

Psalms 138:2 I will bow down toward your holy temple, and give thanks to your Name for your loving kindness and for your truth; for you have exalted your Name and your Word above all.

Proverbs 16:20 He who heeds the Word finds prosperity. Whoever trusts in Yahweh is blessed.

Joel 1:1 The Word of Yahweh that came to Joel, the son of Pethuel.

Haggai 1:1 In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month, the Word of Yahweh came by Haggai, the prophet, to Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua, the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying,

3 Then the Word of Yahweh came by Haggai, the prophet, saying,

Haggai 2:1 In the seventh month, in the twenty-first day of the month, the Word of Yahweh came by Haggai the prophet, saying,

10 In the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the Word of Yahweh came by Haggai the prophet, saying,

20 The Word of Yahweh came the second time to Haggai in the twenty-fourth day of the month, saying,

In the New Testament, the Word has now come to earth and speaks directly to His people. He is working both as the unseen Word, and also as Jesus. As flesh, we can now see and touch the Word. Thus working as Jesus, He is seen in one place talking, praying and healing, but He is also simultaneously in another place, whispering to men as the Word.

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

14 The Word became flesh, and lived among us. We saw his glory, such glory as of the one and only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth.

2 Timothy 2:15 Give diligence to present yourself approved by God, a workman who doesn't need to be ashamed, properly handling the Word of Truth.

1 Peter 2:2 as newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the Word, that you may grow thereby,

1 Peter 3:1 In the same way, wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; so that, even if any don't obey the Word, they may be won by the behavior of their wives without a word;

1 John 1:1 That which was from the beginning, that which we have heard, that which we have seen with our eyes, that which we saw, and our hands touched, concerning the Word of life

Revelation 1:9 I John, your brother and partner with you in oppression, Kingdom, and perseverance in Christ Jesus, was on the isle that is called Patmos because of God's Word and the testimony of Jesus Christ.

Revelation 6:9 When he opened the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been killed for the Word of God, and for the testimony of the Lamb which they had.

Revelation 19:13 He is clothed in a garment sprinkled with blood. His name is called "The Word of God."

May my Master bless you and open your understanding as your read His Word.
